Media Companies
OfCom
A UK communication regulations company that oversees telecommunications, broadcasting and postal industries. It regulates customer satisfaction, interest and complaints and is approved and authorized by the government. An example of it's use would be when Big Brother fans sent over 450 OfCom complaints over housemate Trish.
ASA
Another media regulation company that oversees advertisements in the UK. Unlike OfCom, it's self-regulated meaning they can't exactly enforce legislation. However, the advertising code of practice heavily reflects most legislations, so their rules are being followed nevertheless.
Copyright
Copyrighting is the act of protecting an owned work of media from use without your permission. Copyright claims are very common among video entertainment such as YouTube or TV and can include elements such as music, visuals and characters.
Libel
A false statement published by someone to destroy or damage another persons reputation. This is also known as defamation and is common with celebrities or influential people, who have a broader audience. An interesting case would be the Australian mayor funding the first defamation lawsuit published on Chat GPT. Slander is similar to defamation, however instead of it being written, it's spoken aloud.
BBFC
BBFC is the British classification of content such as Film and Television. It's ranked from U, PG, 12A, 12, 15 and 18 and is founded by the British Film industry of 1912.
Fake News
When false or misleading information is portrayed as news. This is used to damage the reputation of another person, fearmonger or make money through advertising. Recent example of this would be the spread of misinformation about he Israel-Gaza war.
Censorship
The removal or covering of parts of media that can be considered explicit, offensive or threatening. This is done in films, books, news and especially history. An example of censorship would be where a Palestinian filmmaker's work is censored on German broadcasting.
Media Ethics
Media ethics is the dealing with ethical issues or topics in broadcasting, radio, film theatre, art and print. Controversial topics such as war and politics categories as media ethics.
